The Important of the Fifth Commandment

The Fifth Commandment bridges our duty to God and our duty to others, even after we grow up. Learn what honoring your parents actually looks like across different stages of life.

“Honor your father and your mother so that you will live a long time in the land that the Lord your God is going to give you.” - Exodus 20:12

The Fifth Commandment is important in how someone treats their parents. This commandment sits right in the middle of the Ten Commandments. The first four focus on how to treat God, while the last six focus on how to treat other people. Honor means showing respect in how someone should treat their parents. Somone should treat them politely and try not to talk back. They should listen to them and take what they say to heart through their actions, words and thoughts.

Honoring our parents is our duty to God. It means viewing them as significant and treating them with high value like we do with God. Honoring your parents by showing respect to them can be done by using polite words when talking to and about your parents. For younger kids, they are to be obedient, listen to their parents' instruction, and respect their authority. Children living at home should follow their parents' rules and accept their guidance.

Adult children honor aging parents by helping them, checking on them, and providing support when they grow weak or needy. Honoring them also means viewing them as significant and treating them with high value. Adult children do not have to obey every demand, especially if a parent asks them to do something wrong or harmful. If they ask their grown child to do something that puts them in danger like staying in an abusive relationship, they do not have to listen but instead listen to what the Bible teaches.

A child listens to their parents’ advice and considers their thoughts with seriousness, even if they disagree. Human parents are not perfect and they do make mistakes. That is why when it comes down to God, He is perfect, so we need to listen to Him and what the Bible teaches.
