The Importance of the Third Commandment
"Oh my God" — said casually dozens of times a day by millions of people. Here's why the Third Commandment treats that habit as far more serious than many may realize.
I often hear the words...Oh my God. Saying these words if used thoughtlessly is a sin. God does not want His name misused. In the Bible passages Exodus 20:7 and Deuteronomy 5:1, God says that no one should take the Lord's name in vain. In “vain" means in an empty, false, or worthless way. We are to honor God in this way. The Third Commandment is important because people need to honor God's character through truthful speech and a faithful life. God will punish anyone who does not, including anyone who misuses His name.
The Third Commandment is also important because it commands believers to accurately, respectfully, and sincerely represent God's character and reputation rather than treating His identity as empty, false, or worthless. It protects the holiness, reputation, and character of God from being disrespected or misrepresented. Sometimes it can be falsely used. We should not swear an oath or make a promise in God's name and fail to keep it. This is using His authority to deceive. When someone does this, it damages God's reputation by claiming to follow Him while acting wickedly.
This also includes when His name is used in movies, in comedy shows or in any other situation. The commandment forbids using God’s name, or the name of Jesus, as a curse word, expletive, or in careless, thoughtless speech.
Courts use the Bible or invoke God's name in an oath to create a spiritual and moral accountability that encourages a witness to tell the truth. There is power in His name. The power comes from the divine authority, character, and living presence of God Himself rather than from spoken magic words.
As Christians, our words matter, especially in keeping God’s name holy and free from evil.
Prayer of the day:
Dear heavenly Father,
Please help us keep Your name holy. Your name is above all names. We want our words to be holy just as You are. Help us to keep Your name free from evil words that do not honor You. Give us the words to say today. We come to You with humble and grateful hearts, thanking You for revealing Yourself to us. You have called us by Your name, and we recognize the deep responsibility and high honor it is to bear Your name before the watching world.
